In 1908, the first paper coffee filter was created by Melitta Bentz in Dresden. Germany.
She wanted to remove the bitter taste caused by boiling loose grounds or using the typical method
of linen to brew coffee. She thought that if she could pour boiling water over the grounds, but
filter them out, the bitterness would be reduced. She used her son’s blotting paper. Bentz and her
husband started the Melitta Bentz Company to manufacture filters.
1. Clean windows and glass with coffee filers when you’re out of paper towels. Coffee filters
don’t leave lint and are absorbent.
2. Place a coffee filter over a pitcher or a carafe and slowly pour the wine into it to strain wine
with a broken cork.
3. When repotting a plant, place a coffee filter at the bottom of the container over the drainage
hole, and then add the soil to prevent soil from draining out.
4. Coffee filters can be used as makeshift tea bags for loose tea by securing with thread or a
piece of string.
5. A coffee filter is the perfect size for carrying a pita sandwich or a taco on the go.
6. Use coffee filters as disposable bowls for kid’s snacks. The bonus is there’s no dishwashing.
7. Use flattened coffee filters to separate dishes to prevent scratches on fine china when you
stack your dishes.
8. When you’re taking a close-up picture, use a coffee filter to soften the brightness of the flash
by placing a coffee filter over the flash to diffuse it.
9. Use a coffee filter to cover a bowl or a plate when heating up leftovers in the microwave.
10. To protect hands from Popsicle drips slide the wooden stick of the Popsicle through a coffee
