Veterans Day honors all who have served in the U.S. military. In contrast, Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. There are 23.6 million veterans in the United States.

Veterans Day originated as Armistice Day and was first celebrated on November 11, 1919, one year after the end of World War I. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a proclamation in 1954 to change the name to Veterans Day as a way to honor all veterans.

Does Veterans Day have an apostrophe? The official answer is no, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. “Veterans Day does not include an apostrophe but does include an ‘s’ at the end of ‘veterans’ because it is not a day that ‘belongs’ to veterans, it is a day for honoring all veterans.”
